I just returned from visiting Saumur this past Wednesday (September 21,2022). My mission was to visit a place that my family and I departed from 62 years ago (1960). Our father, the late Col. William A L Clay, Jr served in the Army at the Saumur Army Depot from 1957-1960. During that time, we lived in Bagneux where 2 of my brothers attended Ecole du Bagneux and I went to the American school on the Depot.
My visit to the old Depot was on Thursday (September 15,2022) and I was quite shocked to find.it did not resemble my nine-year-old memories or recollections. It appeared that there were only 4 buildings that remained, and they were located to my right as I enter the Depot. The buildings in question looked like 2 barracks, the gym, and the Chapel building where we attended church. The old baseball field now blended in well with the adjacent farmland. The remnants of two foundations could be readily seen where the school that I once attended once stood and the other could have been the NCO Club. The Eastern direction was a private gated home with surrounding land. The sad and disappointing part of my experience at the 2022 version of the Depot was that there was no memorialization or signage that this area was once a U S Military Army Installation where U S Army Soldiers
and their families inhabited and served. This I found rather disturbing because many of the citizens of Saumur did not know that the U S military was in their backyard serving their country.

My father, Private E-2 David G. Freese, served 1958-1959 as assistant to Capt. Robert L. Zelinsky. This site brings me great comfort during a most difficult time as David passed away recently (7/4/2022). He told me in great detail of the many memories he had while serving in Saumur, which included being on their baseball team. He has several photos taken during his time there which I may post later once I'm able to retrieve them. My sincere THANK YOU to all who have a hand in keeping this site available.

My Father was stationed at the base and the family lived in Saumur from 1957-1960. I attended school, church, and recreated on the base to include the movies, bowling alley, PX, Canteen, etc. Infact bowling during that time was 3 games for 55cents. Generally spent the weekends at the base because my brothers attended French school which convened on Saturdays

was stationed at the depot from jan 1955 to feb 1956. we took care of electrical equipment stored in caves. the caves materials were used for buildings in the saumur area 100's of years past. in war 2, the caves were used by the germans to build aircraft engines. then were wine storage. we used them after that. even had a shooting range in one. very nice wine country at that time. a. thouin sp 5

My father and our family was stationed at the Army base in 1956-1958. We lived in a french home in a close by village. We took trips to the storage caves that still housed ordinance and supplies from WW11. As a child I went to school on base and our doctors/dentists were in the Chateau. The town has grown up and recovered and I am glad for that. The pictures and memories are wonderful.
